Video games can transport you to new worlds, take you on wild adventures and give the player the opportunity to control their destiny. The characters they encounter need to feel alive, believable and connected to the world of the game.
Whether it is dialogue, in-game narration, cinematic storytelling, tutorial voiceover or atmospheric world building, the right voice actor can help players feel more immersed in the experience.
I bring warmth, intelligence and emotional range plus a host of accents to video game characters that need to feel natural, responsive and character led.
Gaming voiceover is about creating a performance that feels real within the game’s world. It may need subtle emotion, heightened energy, humour, tension, authority or vulnerability, often within a highly specific tone or style.
My voice is warm, sophisticated, trustworthy and personal, but I can also bring more playful, characterful or dramatic qualities where the game calls for it. I offer a range of character accents and styles, including heightened RP, Northern, Cockney, Scottish and General American and the characters I create range from the ancient hag to the loyal soldier, the protective mother to the terrifying wraith, the trustworthy advisor to the lusty barmaid and the imperious leader to the malevolent villainess.
Whether they need to feel grounded and human, intelligent and authoritative, calm and guiding, playful and expressive, or more dramatic and stylised, I focus on finding the truth of the character and the scene.
I work collaboratively with studios, developers, casting teams and producers to understand the world of the game, the role of my character and the emotional intention behind the dialogue.
Hiring a voice actor for an indie game starts with understanding what your characters need to bring to the player. You may only need a few key lines, a narrator, combat barks, tutorial guidance or a fully voiced story, but the right performance can help make the world feel more complete.
Before contacting a video game voice actor, it helps to have a short brief ready. This might include character notes, the tone of the game, script length, reference material, deadlines and whether the session will be self-directed or live-directed.
For indie developers, a professional voice actor can bring experience, flexibility and performance detail without making the process feel overwhelming. Good game voice acting should support the design, enhance the character and help the player feel more connected to the world you have created.
A clear voice acting brief helps your game voice actor understand the world, character and performance style you are looking for. It does not need to be complicated, but it should give enough context to make the read feel connected to the game rather than simply performed from a script.
Useful details include character notes, the tone of the game, emotional references, script length, deadlines, usage, and whether you need self-directed recording or a live-directed session. If the character appears in specific gameplay moments, it can also help to explain what the player is seeing or doing when the line is heard.
Your character’s accent is also worth explaining clearly. Rather than only naming an accent, it can help to describe the character’s background, class, region, world or personality, so the voice feels specific rather than generic. I can provide multiple accents and am always happy to offer a few different reads for each character, helping you explore which version best fits the game.
For indie developers and game studios, a good brief can make the recording process smoother, faster and more creative. It gives the actor room to bring ideas to the character, while helping every line feel consistent with the story, gameplay and world you are building.
Kate recently stepped in at very short notice to voice a short corporate film for us. As soon as I spoke to her I knew I was in safe hands. She has that rare ability to interpret the brief and deliver exactly what you need and she is also very professional and lovely to deal with.
